Youth Speaks Hawai’i 2012 Grand Slam Finals

Friday, March 23, 2012, Youth Speaks Hawai’i presents
the 2012 Grand Slam Finals at
Farrington High School Auditorium
to determine the top 6 teen poets in Hawai’i*
who will represent Hawai’i in national competition
at Brave New Voices, in San Francisco, this July.

*16 competitors will go two rounds to determine the team.

The 16 competitors are comprised of:
– the top 12 after March 2nd Saturday qualifiers (in attendance at sign-in time)
Serena Simmons
Noa Helela
Samson Tafolo
Faith Pascua
Hannah Matsunaga
Joanna Gordon
Rick Manayan
Malaya Valenzuela
Olivia Peterkin
Solomon Stoddard
Keith Dowsett
Malia Derden
Cherie Warner
– four “storm” poets (first come, first served at sign-in time)

Order will be determined by draw and point ranking with:
– the four “storm” poets drawing to determine slots 1-4
– the top 14 qualifiers going from lowest to highest point total in slots 5-16

Score for each poem will be determined by five judges
on a scale from 0-10 points with decimals (e.g. 6.4, 9.5, 8.0).
The high and low score will be dropped
leaving a total possible of 30 points.

The ten top scoring poets of the first round
advance to the second round
where order is reversed from the first round

Following the second round
poet scores from the first and second are added
and the 6 poets with the highest cumulative totals (out of 60)
will be awarded spots on the
Youth Speaks Hawai’i 2012 BNV team.
